Veteran Concert Band (Symphonic Band)

Also known as Symphonic Band — Erie’s advanced spring-semester concert ensemble (brass, woodwind, and percussion).

Veteran Concert Band / Symphonic Band is designed for students who have a thorough understanding of the basic fundamentals of music. The ensemble performs quality literature from all stylistic periods in a performance-oriented learning experience: class rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and evening performances are mandatory (typically 2–3 evening performances per semester).

Who it’s for

Experienced high-school musicians seeking advanced concert literature
Typically primarily upperclassmen, based on audition ranking and ensemble needs
Students who can commit to mandatory rehearsals and performances

Auditions & registration

To participate, students must be enrolled in Marching Band first semester and successfully complete the audition (and rank high enough in the audition group to be selected).

Auditioning students should register for MU1101B Concert Band (Spring semester only) so the director can complete final placement
Current Symphonic Band students should register for MU1400 Symphonic Band (Spring semester only) when that course code is published for the year
Returning Symphonic Band members are not required to re-audition

Use the current audition site for forms, excerpts, and deadlines — do not treat a prior year’s due date as current unless it is still posted.

Typical audition materials

Recent Symphonic / Veteran audition packets have included:

Part 1 — Major scale: favorite major scale up and down (two octaves if possible)
Part 2 — Chromatic scale: full-range chromatic, eighth notes, ascending and descending, articulated both directions
Part 3 — Excerpt: instrument-specific excerpt(s) from the current packet (percussion: required mallet scales plus a snare excerpt)

Strong pathway toward SVVSD Honor Band and Colorado All-State Band preparation
